Amarillo announced as home for new Cacique food processing operation Officials with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office announced Wednesday afternoon that Amarillo will be the home to a new food processing operation of Cacique, a brand of authentic Mexican-style cheeses, cremas and chorizos.  According to previous Globe-News reports, Cacique plans to build a 200,000-square-foot food processing facility at the southern end of a business park located near the intersection of Farmers Avenue and South Georgia Street in Randall County. The facility will cost $88 million, with $52 million in estimated improvements as well as $36 million in new equipment. In the first phase of the project, Cacique would bring 200 new, full-time jobs to the community, with the possibility of adding 300 jobs thereafter. 

Mayor Nelson sworn in for another term at Amarillo City Council meeting

During Tuesday’s regular meeting of the city of Amarillo’s city council, Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson was officially sworn in for another term, coming after candidate Claudette Smith challenged the race through recount proceedings after the results of the May 1 election. According to previous reports by the Amarillo Globe-News, Nelson, along with Place One Council member Cole Stanley, Place Two Council member Freda Powell, Place Three Council member Eddy Sauer and Place Four Council member Howard Smith were all elected to their respective positions May 1.  However after the results came out, mayoral candidate Claudette Smith requested a recount for the mayor’s race. Because of the proceedings, it delayed the official canvassing and the swearing in of Nelson for this term as Mayor, something Nelson spoke about during the council meeting. 

American Quarter Horse Association to stay in Amarillo

City of Amarillo officials expressed excitement regarding the change in conversation surrounding the home of the American Quarter Horse Association after the council approved an action item concerning the association on Tuesday.  “We are going to celebrate today as we change the phrase…’please stay AQHA’ to ‘hooray AQHA,’” Mayor Ginger Nelson said during a Tuesday afternoon news conference. “Amarillo is proud to be your home.”  During Tuesday’s meeting, the Amarillo City Council approved a location incentive agreement from the Amarillo Economic Development Corp. to keep the home of the AQHA in Amarillo for 10 years after there were conversations that the association was moving to Fort Worth.

Hillsboro EDC Wins Workforce Excellence Award

Share Hillsboro EDC Wins Workforce Excellence Award The Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) announced last week the recipients of its 2021 Workforce Excellence Awards, with Hillsboro Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) being the recipient in the 15,000 and under population category. The award winners are recognized at the annual TEDC mid-year conference, which will be held June 9-10 in Frisco. The HEDC application was based on the 2020 Hill County Youth Career Fair held in March 2020 at Hill College. HEDC, Hillsboro ISD, Heart of Texas Workforce Development Board (HOTWDB) and Hill College partnered to organize the event. It was open to all high school juniors and seniors in the county, with over 600 students on the Hill College campus in Hillsboro just prior to the pandemic shutting down all schools.
