AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The City of Amarillo and Potter County officials met this morning to discuss ideas for a plan that aims to bring economic development to the southeast area.
The project would make a Tri-State Exposition Master Plan, which would encourage tourism.
“That helps our property taxpayers,” said Amarillo Mayor, Ginger Nelson during an interview with The Chat. “We can reduce what property taxpayers pay to support city operations by increasing our sales tax and increasing what we collect on hotel occupancy tax.”
Officials with the Amarillo Independent School District, as well as members of the district’s board, recently heard from representatives from the city of Amarillo regarding the exploration of further development in the area of the Tri-State Fairgrounds, where the district, as well as Potter County, the Amarillo-Potter Events Venue District and the Tri-State Expo Board of Directors, own property.
According to prior reports by the Amarillo Globe-News, city officials want to further develop the area, similar to the downtown development plan, opening the opportunity for more tourism and economic opportunities in that part of town.
For the project, the city’s goal is to make a master plan document, developing plans to further enhance the 104 acres of the fairgrounds and the 24 acres the district owns as well as other area commercial and residential properties over the next 15 to 20 years.
