Even if you didn t know her, that s a human : Portage family mourns daughter who was killed in crash, left by driver

PORTAGE, Wis. A Portage family’s 4th of July plans are shattered. Instead of spending the weekend with their daughter and sister Ashley Slama, they’re planning her funeral. The driver who deputies believe is responsible for her death is now in jail, but her family wants to see justice served. “We are going to fight to the end to make sure that he understands what he’s done, what he has taken away from this family,” said Treyton Schommer, Slama’s brother. “My sister will get justice for his stupidity and his actions.” The Sauk County Sheriff’s Department said early Saturday morning a deputy pulled over a car for a traffic violation on CTH T in the Township of Delton. Slama was one of the two passengers in that car. But when the deputy walked up to the car, the driver took off.

If you’ve been on the Beltline lately, you’ve probably noticed the increase in traffic, and not just during rush hour. When the highway is cut down to just one lane on some nights, drivers are often left at a standstill. Although the Flex Lane construction is playing a role, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy Evan Tilleson said there’s also more cars on the road. “We’re also seeing higher traffic volume right now being that people are going back to work and the pandemic is winding down,” said Tilleson.

A lot of kids I feel have lost their confidence in the water : Swim school says pandemic caused kids to forget life-saving swimming skills

FITCHBURG, Wis. After being forced to close, then opening up classes at limited capacity, SwimWest Swim School’s pool is now fully open to students. “We are back to our original numbers of 2019, which has been our goal for awhile now. So that’s amazing to see our families coming back,” said instructor Olivia Winch. But the pause in classes left a lot of kids without a chance to practice life-saving swim skills in 2020. “A lot of kids I feel have lost their confidence in the water just because it’s been so long since they have had that experience to get in and go underwater or hold their breath. A lot of kids have forgotten how to do that,” said SwimWest Aquatic Director Kassy Rabenhorst.
