As the absolute defeat of the Left Front (LF) in the Bengal elections became clear on May 2, 63-year-old Tanmay Bhattacharya, sometime DYFI president, retired bank employee, former MLA from Dum Dum North and member of the district committee of the CPM, laid the blame at the feet of the state leadership on live television. The district committee has distanced itself from the views. Excerpts from a conversation with him:
Q:
What according to you is the reason for the LF not winning any seats in this election?
A: This vote was a vote against Modi and the people did not have faith that the LF would be a viable alternative against him. The people gifted the captainship of this state’s fight against Modi to Mamata Banerjee. We can argue whether they are right or wrong but the truth is the people have entrusted Mamata Bane

State rejects Religion-Led Politics
Nantoo Banerjee The most important lesson from the results of the latest West Bengal Assembly election is that the state is not prepared to accept religion-led politics. The state would rather suffer inadequate economic development, lack of industry, large unemployment and extortion than surrender to a political rule compromised on religion. The biggest election shock came from voters thrashing the CPM-CongressIndian Secular Front alliance this time. They fell for general perception and cleric Siddiqui’s logic that Muslims prefer an Islamic party to so-called secular political forces. T

New Delhi: The victory of the Trinamul Congress, DMK and LDF in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have given rise to the possibility of the Opposition parties coming together to form a Federal Front to take on the ruling BJP-led NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. While Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee returned to power by trouncing the BJP in West Bengal for the third time, the LDF led by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan created history with his second consecutive electoral victory. In Tamil Nadu, DMK leader M.K. Stalin convincingly defeated the BJP-backed ruling AIAD
Lessons For Telugu States From The Verdict In Five States Published by GulteDesk May 04, 2021
Though the electoral landscape significantly varies from state to state, every election offers interesting pointers to ponder. Politicians can draw suitable lessons from any election.
The politics of polarization attempted by BJP has not worked to the fullest extent in Bengal. The party’s vote share in Kerala dipped from 14.96 in 2016 to 11.3 percent in 2021, despite running a high voltage divisive campaign around the Supreme Court verdict on Sabarimala temple and its enforcement by the left government. The BJP’s Vetri Vel Yatra covering abodes of Lord Muruga failed to yield any political dividends for the saffron brigade in the land known for atheist politics of Dravidian identity.
