AL-MUKALLA: The US has criticized the Iran-backed Houthis for refusing to meet UN Yemen envoy Martin Griffiths in the Omani capital and spurning calls to stop their deadly offensive against Yemen’s central city of Marib.
“The Houthis passed up a major opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to peace and to make progress on this proposal by refusing to meet with UN special envoy Griffiths in Muscat,” the US State Department said in a statement, adding that the Houthis contradicted their commitments to comply with the available “fair deal” to end the worsening humanitarian crisis by escalating their offensive on Marib.
“For Yemenis, Marib is an existential part of life for them, for their children and for their future. It is the final battle between freedom, the republic and democracy and this religious theocracy that the Houthis are trying to implement.”
The UN’s envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, said this week that the latest round of talks on enacting a ceasefire in Marib and other hotspots in Yemen had stalled, killing hopes of a breakthrough after US President Joe Biden s administration made ending the war a priority.
In a statement on Friday, US Special Envoy for Yemen Tim Lenderking bashed the Houthis for their ongoing assault on Marib and for refusing to meet Mr Griffiths to discuss the ceasefire.

Yemen’s internationally recognised government said it backs Saudi Arabia s rejection of armed groups outside of the state s authority such as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Thursday.
It came days after Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman gave a landmark interview marking five years since the kingdom embarked on its Vision 2030 initiative to transform the country from an oil-dependent economy to a more modern, knowledge-driven society.
In the interview, he said the conflict in Yemen is a sticking point towards having any peace with Iran.
“We appreciate Saudi Arabia s affirmation of its position on the Houthi coup against the legitimate government, and its rejection of any armed groups outside the state’s authority,” said the director of Yemen’s Presidential office, Abdullah Al Alimi.
