Slowing COVID-19 vaccine demand in Abilene prompts outreach efforts

That number is not expanding as rapidly local as health officials might like. The Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District has noted a slowdown in those attending its clinics, health district director Annette Lerma said. The current percentages reflect changing denominators as guidelines on who can take the vaccine have expanded. But while the number of those who can be vaccinated has increased, the decline in participation has prompted the health district to reduce mass clinics to once a week, Lerma said. The number that we were doing each week, we could easily do in one day, she said. And, honestly, we could probably do it in a half a day. But we wanted to still leave an entire day for people to schedule what s convenient for them.

Expensive construction and costly changes made at the last minute have affected the Abilene Independent School District s 2018 bond construction program. Initially, voters approved a $138.7 million price tag. District officials at the time knew the actual cost would be higher and vowed to find alternative sources to pay for the difference. They ve attempted that, but financial statements and estimates indicate there s little wiggle room as work winds down on the most expensive projects. What s gone right? Where did costs skyrocket? There s a lot to unpack from the district s financial report provided during Monday s regular meeting of the district s school board. Red ink not yet dry
