A grim atmosphere is gripping the Tapovan hydel project site where multi-agency rescuers have been working overtime to find traces of life in tunnel-1, but have found none so far.
“We are not giving up hope,” says Benu Dhar Nayak, Commanding Officer of the ITBP battalion in Joshimath, who led 50 personnel to the flashflood-ravaged site on Sunday morning and pulled out 12 workers alive from tunnel-2.
All of 50 metres length, tunnel-2 was easier to access. But that has not been the case with tunnel-1, which is 2.5 km long, structurally challenging and flooded with slush, hampering rescue operations from the word go. At least 30 to 35 labourers are estimated to be trapped inside the tunnel at around 200 metres from the opening. High-power machines landed at the tunnel only yesterday and have cleared around 120 metres of debris.
Chamoli (Uttarakhand) [India], February 10 (ANI): There is not much progress in the ongoing rescue operation following the glacier burst in Uttarakhand, said Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP), Ashok Kumar on Wednesday.
Rescue workers using massive earth-moving machines worked through the night to remove debris and rescue some 35 people feared trapped inside a tunnel in Uttarakhand's Tapovan, which was hit by a sudden flood after a glacier broke off in the upper reaches of the hill state.
Chamoli (Uttarakhand) [India], February 10 (ANI): Few bodies, which have drifted to Rudraprayag and Srinagar districts due to the Alaknanda river's heavy flow following glacier burst in Uttarakhand, Chamoli Police said on Wednesday.
