Last-minute baking ideas for Motherâs Day

Is it me or is finding something new and exciting to do to celebrate the mother figures in your life becoming almost impossible?
In a way, I am sort of relieved that I wonât be spending Motherâs Day with my mother and grandmother again this year because I feel like I have exhausted all my options.
Motherâs Day, birthdays and Christmas really out me to the test and I usually end up giving them money or gift vouchers. Lazy, I know.
But recently, I came across an Instagram page, uBaked, that had beautiful bread and pastries. I immediately thought how both mum and gogo would have loved this bread.
Among the hardest hit will be Gorge Road [19 per cent or $387 increase]; Nightcaps [18 per cent or $430 increase]; Stewart Island [18 per cent or $344; Orepuki [17 per cent or $197]; Tuatapere [17 per cent or $431]; Ohai [17 per cent or $387] and Tokanui [17 per cent or $330]. At the other end of the scale, Thornbury faces an average four per cent, or $64 increase, Browns a five per cent increase [$88], and Woodlands a 6 per cent increase [$98]. Ohai resident Asha Carr said she believed the council was tone deaf to propose such high hikes for many people, given some were already struggling financially and with stress due to losing jobs during Covid.
She said the council had 160 different rate types. Robson highlighted that the Tuatapere Te Waewae community board rate would rise, one factor being the cost of mowing going up for the same amount of work, despite the contract having gone out for tender. “Sometimes it s give and take,” Robson said. Tuatapere resident Myles Greber said “but it seems in this case it s just give.” The rate take in Tuatapere would go up because of water, sewerage and depreciation costs, Environment Southland discharge rates, meeting statutory requirements and the increase to the local community board rate, Robson said. The meeting went for about an hour and forty minutes, where nine councillors and council staff were on hand to answer questions.
