CRAVEN farmers took a bit of convincing when the whole idea of the Women’s Land Army (WLA) and ‘land girls’ was presented to them back in the hard days of the Second World War. Farmers were ‘more than a little sceptical about the wisdom of employing lasses’ reported the Craven Herald 75 years ago, in April, 1946. The paper was following up reports from the WLA that it had received a ‘raw deal’ from some authorities, which was a pity said the Herald, which concluded that the land girls had done an excellent job, many had settled down in the area, and that their efforts were still needed in peace time.

Gentleman Jack writer Sally Wainwright will pen a “swashbuckling adventure series” about a highway robber for Disney+.
Set in the 18th century, The Ballad of Renegade Nell will be produced by Lookout Point, the company behind her hit show about Anne Lister.
The show will follow Nell Jackson, who is framed for murder and forced into a life of highway robbery, along with her two orphaned sisters Roxanne and George.

Sally Wainwright is set to write the script for a new Disney+ adventure series
Gentleman Jack writer Sally Wainwright is set to pen a swashbuckling adventure series about a highway robber for Disney+.
Set in the 18th century
, The Ballad of Renegade Nell will be produced by Lookout Point, the company behind her hit show about Anne Lister.
The show will follow Nell Jackson, who is framed for murder and forced into a life of highway robbery, along with her two orphaned sisters Roxanne and George.
Disney said: Aided by a plucky little spirit called Billy Blind, Nell realises that fate has put her on the wrong side of the law for a reason, a reason much bigger than she could ve ever imagined, a reason that goes right up to Queen Anne and beyond, to the struggle for power raging across the battlefields of Europe.
