Sunday is Motherâs Day, but before you stream a movie with the title âMotherâs Day,â watch out. The one thatâs a feel-good comedy just might make momâs day. The grindhouse exploitation film could ruin her weekend. (Props to the moms whose taste is the reverse.)
Take out the word âDayâ and find even more dark options. In movies called âMotherâ (or a variation of that word), the title women are mostly killers, menaces, sexual obsessives and sometimes all three. Even in the comedy named âMother,â sheâs no sweetheart.

Starring Gabriel Byrne. Directed by Matthew Bissonnette. Streaming online at VIFF Connect from Friday (March 12) to May 6.
Canadian writer-director Matthew Bissonnette’s surrealistic drama a Canadian-Irish coproduction casts Gabriel Byrne as Samuel O’Shea, a McGill poetry professor in Montreal who starts experiencing vivid, thematically relevant hallucinations as the result of a malignant brain tumour.
Sometimes his dead father (Brian Gleeson) turns up for a chat. Sometimes people around him burst into song. (As the title implies, a certain Leonard Cohen album factors heavily in the storytelling.)
Leonard Cohen s songs, spirit infuse Montreal-shot film Death of a Ladies Man Matthew Bissonnette has paid homage to the Montreal icon before, but his new film takes the tribute to another level.
