Only 25% of elected councillors across the country s 102 communes are women, Equality Minister Taina Bofferding said in answer to a parliamentary question from the Pirate Party on Friday, and the average age of local politicians is 54.
Involving more young people in local government would create more diversity, Bofferding said, and make gender roles less traditional.
Luxembourg struggles with gender equality in politics. Ahead of the last national elections in 2018, the National Women s Council said that Luxembourg lags it peers such as France when it comes to representation of women in ministerial and parliamentary politics.
