KANSAS CITY, MO (AP) Salvador Perez celebrated his selection for the All-Star Home Run Derby in the most appropriate way possible.
The Kansas City catcher swatted a pitch from Twins starter J.A. Happ that was nowhere near the strike zone into the right-field stands Friday night, his solo shot triggering a big comeback for the Royals. They tied the game later in the second inning, pulled ahead on Hanser Alberto’s two-run shot in the third and went on to a 7-4 victory over Minnesota.
“That wasn’t even close to a strike,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli marveled afterward. “That’s not a pitch that’s normally hit out, but that’s not where the ball was intended, either.”
SAN DIEGO (AP) Hours after saying he would skip the All-Star Home Derby next month, Fernando Tatis Jr. put on his own personal power show. Tatis hit three homers, energizing Petco Park with the most dynamic performance of his short but spectacular career, as the San Diego Padres sent the Arizona Diamondbacks to their record 24th straight road loss, 11-5 Friday night.

SAN DIEGO San Diego slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. hit three home runs Friday night, connecting hours after saying he would not participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby at Denver s Coors Field on July 12.
Tatis cited his left shoulder, which he said is at 75% following an injury early this season. He sustained a partial dislocation during a hard swing against San Francisco.
The 22-year-old shortstop looked in peak form against Arizona, homering in each of his first three at-bats.
Tatis hit solo home runs in the first and second innings, and his two-run drive in the fourth put the Padres ahead 8-5. Tatis singled in his fourth at-bats and then grounded out in the eighth.
