Writers, intellects condemn hate speech against Amar Jalil

In a statement, members of literary community demand action against those instigating violence KARACHI: The literary community came together on Wednesday to pledge support for writer Amar Jalil, condemning the recent hate speech and instigation of violence against him. More than 300 writers, poets, intellectuals, human rights activists, lawyers, journalists, teachers, students and other people from different walks of life asked the government to provide security to the writer and take stringent action against those instigating violence against him. In their statement, writers including Noorul Huda Shah, Anis Haroon, Jami Chandio, Arfana Mallah, Amar Sindhu, Ahmed Shah, Fazil Jamili and Dr Ayoub Shaikh demanded immediate action against those responsible.

Women Conference from Saturday - Newspaper

KARACHI: President Arts Council Pakistan, Karachi Mohammad Ahmed Shah on Thursday announced that the Second Women Conference would be taking place in the city on March 6 and 7. Addressing a press conference, Mr Shah said that “We pay tribute to all the women who have excelled in every field. If women are put aside, all dreams of development are unfulfilled”. He said that Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) will be followed strictly at the conference. The audience will be allowed to sit in the hall with a gap of one empty seat. Masks will be provided to those who come without them and hands will be sanitized at the entrance.

Two-day 2nd Women Conference begins at Arts Council tomorrow

Karachi March 5, 2021 The Pakistan Arts Council will hold the 2nd Women Conference in Karachi on March 6 (tomorrow) and March 7, Arts Council President Mohammad Ahmed Shah announced during a news conference. “We pay tribute to all the women who have excelled in every field. If women are pushed aside, all dreams of development will remain unfulfilled,” said Shah. “A single woman cannot work for her rights. Economic empowerment will not be possible if women are forced to stay at home; both men and women must work together.” He said that the issue of women’s rights is an international issue. He also said that the 2nd Women Conference is being organised in consultation with female experts in their respective fields.

Gender-based violence increased in Sindh during lockdown: SHRC

Karachi February 14, 2021 The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has found in its initial assessment that cases of gender-based violence and other human rights abuses increased across the province during the lockdown imposed to restrict the spread of Covid-19. The SHRC held a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the findings of the initial assessment report. The heads and representatives of different institutions and professional groups shared their experiences as well as the challenges they faced during the lockdown. The commission observed in its assessment that Covid-19 impacted all spheres of life, and human rights is no exception; it rendered a large number of people jobless during the lockdown, causing people to face socio-economic and psychological problems.
