TABAQUITE MP Anita Haynes says Communications Minister Symon de Nobriga’s recent “joke” about giving State-owned media exclusive access to certain events while restricting independent media has “uncovered a lot of issues.”
She said the “foot in mouth situation” is no laughing matter.
On Saturday, there were reports of media having restricted access while covering the repatriation of Venezuelans from the Cruise Ship Complex, Port of Spain, with state-owned TTT being allowed access beyond a certain point.
Journalist Kejan Haynes reported this on his independent news and media programme, News at Seven.
He said he asked why only TTT was allowed in, while his reporter and Newsday s reporter were debarred, as had happened at other events. He said he was told off-camera by de Nobriga that this was to give TTT a fighting chance.

Haynes: Talks on schools should be held before guidelines drafted
Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes
MP for Tabaquite Anita Haynes has said the Ministry of Education should have consulted with stakeholders before the draft guide to the reopening of schools was drawn up
In a statement, Haynes called on the ministry to “embark on genuine good-faith consultations with stakeholders.”
The statement came after the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) and the National Primary Schools Principals’ Association (NAPSPA) boycotted a meeting with the ministry on Monday.
Education stakeholders were emailed the draft guidelines for the reopening of schools 2021/2022 on Friday. The two associations felt that was not enough time to review them.

THE Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill 2021 was passed in Parliament on Friday with full support of the Opposition on the last day of Parliament.
No amendments were raised when the Bill was sent to committee stage and the 22 clauses were passed without any further amendments. This clears the way for it to be made law once signed off by the President. In wrapping up the debate, Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi, thanked the Opposition for their support. He said the legislation will allow the powers that be to “manage monsters.”
