Make it five home runs in four games for Oswald Peraza, who served as the lone bright spot in a bad night for Hudson Valley. Estevan Florial’s Scranton debut was a successful one, Somerset came back to steal a win, and the Tarpons’ biggest bats carried the load.

RHP Adonis Medina (1-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. LHP Mike Montgomery (0-1, 8.22 ERA)
The RailRiders clinched at least a split of the six-game series on Friday with a 5-3 victory. Despite Brian Keller only going 2.1 innings in his start, the bullpen held Lehigh Valley to one run over the final 6.2 innings led by Kyle Barraclough, who struck out four in 1.2 hitless innings in relief of Keller.

This past week, the minor leagues took the field for the first time since September 2019. It was a successful week within the Yankees organization, as three of the four affiliated teams finished the week with at least a share of first place in their respective divisions. In addition to team success, many of the Yankees top prospects put together outstanding season debuts. Since all four teams were off yesterday, let’s use the breather to take a look across the Yankees system at some of the top performers from week one of the minor league season.

Brandon Woodruff has quietly been one of the better pitchers in the National League since the start of the 2019 season. In 42 starts comprising 237 innings, the Milwaukee Brewers right-hander has 285 strikeouts to go with a 3.11 ERA and a 2.93 FIP. The last of those numbers is equal to Shane Bieber’s mark over the same period.
A big reason for Woodruff’s success is a repertoire adjustment he made midway through the 2018 season. As he explained in an article that ran here at FanGraphs last April, he began throwing both two- and four-seam fastballs. Neither is anything to write home about movement-wise, but paired together and sequenced well they’re a formidable combo. As Woodruff told me at the time, “It’s hard for the hitter to distinguish which one is going to be coming.”
