Otto von Bismarck once famously remarked that the “great European war will come out of some damn foolish thing in the Balkans.” We may have inched closer to that damn foolish thing in recent weeks.
On Feb. 1, a new law came into effect in China, which codified Beijing’s claim that its well-armed Coast Guard could remove vessels in its waters “illegally” and use force against them if necessary. This is no more or less a “law” than any other law administrated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), since Beijing could use its Coast Guard to attack vessels from other nations any time it wanted to, without any such law. Description
An uncommon large scale 1898 William Fox map of the Adirondack mountains of New York. The map covers the entire Adirondack Mountain region, extending from Saratoga to Plattsburg, and from Lewis County to Lake George and Lake Champlain. The map was made on behalf of the State Fisheries, game Commission for administrative purposes. The boundaries of the Adirondack State Park are defined by a bold blue line. Additional color coding designates the state of various lands. Pink shading identifies state forest preserve lands, yellow illustrates those lands bought or contract by the Forest Preserve Board, and lighter pink lands in which the state has joint ownership.

Description
A stunning 1891 example of Bancroft s important city plan or map of San Francisco, California. This map covers the northern top of the San Francisco Peninsula from the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay and as far south as Rancho Canada de Guadeloupe. Bancroft employs shading to distinguish between developed and undeveloped lots. At bottom there is a numerical key wherein some 396 individual buildings are located and categorized. Concentric circles indicate half-mile distances from the ferries. Development extends as far as the Ocean Race Track. Rancho Laguna de la Merced, San Miguel Rancho, and Rancho Cañada de Guadalupe Rodeo Viejo y Vistación are at this point undeveloped. An inset on the right details the greater San Francisco Bay area.
