Long before George Floyd was killed during an encounter with Minneapolis Police officers last May, the department was struggling with a history of police misconduct and allegations of racism and sexism within its ranks.
A documentary that debuts next week on PBS takes viewers inside the police force, offering insight into the inner workings of the department and its efforts to connect with residents.

Marion Ramsey, the actress best known for her role as Officer Laverne Hooks in the film franchise “Police Academy,” died Thursday in Los Angeles at the age of 73, according to a statement to CNN from manager Roger Paul. No cause of death was given.
“Marion carried with her a kindness and permeating light that instantly filled a room upon her arrival. The dimming of her light is already felt by those who knew her well. We will miss her, and always love her,” the statement said.
Born in Philadelphia, Ramsey’s entertainment career started on stage. She co-starred in Broadway shows, including productions of “Eubie!” and “Grind,” and toured the nation in the musical “Hello Dolly.”
Police Academy fame has died. She was 73.
According to reports, Ramsey passed away at her home in Los Angeles on Thursday (January 7). Roger Paul of Roger Paul Inc., who managed Ramsey, confirmed the unfortunate news to
Variety. Her cause of death remains to be determined, though her agency revealed the star had recently been ill.
Ramsey was popularly known for her portrayal of the soft-spoken Officer Laverne Hooks in six
Police Academy films from 1984-1989, including
Police Academy 6: Under Siege (1989) and
Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach.
