DALLAS As Dallas approaches the solemn five year anniversary of the ambush shooting deaths of five police officers, their families continue to honor them.
For Valerie Zamarripa, honoring her son means letting his fellow officers know that she will always consider them part of her extended family.
Officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, was one of the five police officers who were shot and killed on July 7, 2016 in Dallas by a gunman who used street protests to conceal his ambush attack.

The River Edge police union announced the death of Sgt. Christopher Cheevers in a Facebook post on Wednesday. The River Edge PBA is with a heavy heart that we reflect on the fact that we lost our friend, our brother, and our sergeant, Christopher Cheevers, the union said in the message, penned by the union president, Officer Patrick Diamond.
Cheevers was an over-24-year veteran of the River Edge PBA and Police Department, according to Diamond, who spoke with NorthJersey.com on Wednesday night on behalf of the union.
Diamond was unable to discuss the circumstances of Cheevers death, but he spoke fondly of his former colleague, saying Cheevers always had a smile on his face and would help you through anything.
