Detectives are investigating after a woman gave birth to a baby in a City Heights canyon and the baby died, police said.
Officers were called shortly before 8:30 a.m. by someone reporting that a woman had just given birth in a canyon, said San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez.
Officers found an unresponsive baby in the canyon off Landis Street near 40th Street, which is near Cherokee Point Elementary School.
The baby and mother were transported to the hospital. The baby was pronounced dead. The condition of the mother was not known.

“Child abuse units responded and will do an investigation to find out about the nature of what happened to the baby,” Martinez said.

A pursuit that began when San Diego police tried to pull over a car with expired registration on Wednesday night ended when the driver crashed into another vehicle and a light pole and then ran into a canyon.
The pursuit began around 10:45 p.m. when an officer driving on Santa Margarita Street in the Valencia Park neighborhood spotted a sedan with expired registration.
When the officer tried to pull the car over, the driver took off and the officer lost sight of him. The car crashed into a SUV and an electrical pole at the intersection of Santa Margarita and San Jacinto Drive, said San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez.

A man armed with a crowbar was subdued with a Taser and arrested early Thursday in Sherman Heights after he allegedly threatened a San Diego police officer with it, police said.
Officers were initially called around 4:40 a.m. about a man threatening people with a crowbar around 20th Street and Market Street. Police were sent to check the area but were unable to find the man.
About 20 minutes later, someone called police to say the man was spotted again, this time near 22nd Street and Market Street, said police Officer Tony Martinez.
An officer tried to make contact with the man but he ran. Officers approached the man but he did not follow verbal commands and swung the crowbar at an officer, Martinez said.
SAN DIEGO
A 31-year-old man was stabbed twice in the leg during an early morning fight in Mission Valley on Sunday, San Diego police said.
The incident happened about 4:10 a.m. on the Morena Boulevard bike path just north of Interstate 8, according to police Officer Tony Martinez. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police later detained three people, two men and a woman, in connection with the incident.
