On 3 May 1946, the fate of the Marine Corps was determined in a little-known battle fought off the coast of San Fransisco on the infamous Alcatraz Island.
To understand the importance of the battle on “The Rock,” we need to set the stage for what life was like for the Marines in post-war America during the mid-1940s.

Back From the War
When the calendar flipped over to 1946, WWII had just concluded and battle-hardened troops were returning stateside to their families and a new normal. These men had been a part of ferocious battles in Africa, Italy, and all over the Pacific on islands like Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The men who returned home had made it through what many consider to be the toughest war in human history. By the time the war ended, the men who had survived these battles were hardened, decorated, and skilled weapons of war.

This boilerplate phrase shows up in search warrants and other law enforcement paperwork something used a preemptive defense for whatever rights violations might occur subsequent to these sworn statements. Using training and expertise as the foundation for a defense against lawsuits and accusations of bias is handy: it shows the officer was being reasonable and only engaged in a roadside fishing expedition or hurled a flashbang grenade into a toddler s crib because all of this training led officers to believe criminals often engage in [Action X], thus justifying law enforcement [Action Y].
But this blanket assertion is as useless and full of shit as this Tenth Circuit Appeals Court decision granting qualified immunity to officers who detained someone for recording them while they assaulted an arrestee. (h/t Brad Heath)

After 32 years with the Tarpon Springs Police Department and the last decade spent leading it, Police Chief Robert Kochen retired Thursday. His replacement is a familiar face in the city: Maj. Jeff Young, who has spent most of his life in Tarpon Springs.
Both chiefs were honored, and Young sworn into his new role, during a ceremony at Tuesdayâs meeting of the Tarpon Springs City Commission. The commissioners and residents praised Kochenâs leadership and his efforts toward keeping the small cityâs police department relevant and robust.
