More than £5m has been invested in Community Safety Partnerships and community pilot schemes to tackle and prevent violent crime from happening across Greater Manchester, an annual report has highlighted.
The Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) was launched in October 2019 and brings together Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), the National Probation Service as well as health, education and youth justice services and the VCSE sector to address the underlying causes of violent crime and to work together to prevent it.

Over the coming weeks, officers from the Rochdale neighbourhood task force and Rochdale Council will be working alongside colleagues from GMP s Special Operations Branch and Transport Unit, as well as representatives from the British Transport Police, Metrolink and Greater Manchester s TravelSafe partnership to prevent anti-social behaviour, knife crime and fare-dodging.
Prevention methods which will be deployed during the month and throughout the year, as part of GMP s Operation Sycamore include; increased stop and searches on the Metrolink network and increased uniform and plain clothed patrols.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) data provided from a Freedom of Information requestion shows there were 17 reported stabbings in the borough between October 2019 and September this year. That is two more than the same period in 2018/19 (15) but less than half the figure in 2017/18 (41). However, stabbings in Bolton remain a serious concern. Earlier this month, on Monday, December 7, a 31-year-old man was “repeatedly stabbed” on Rankine Terrace, near the town centre, after a gang of three approached him.
