The new Spencerville site was chosen – rather than rebuilding on either of the current sites – because uniting volunteers from the Brooklands and Bottle Lake stations was seen as the best way to support and protect the local communities and nearby forest plantations. The 31-strong team has been training and responding from their new station since March, leading the way as the first fully unified brigade in Canterbury.

The Press reported on November 25, 1975. The British-born Wizard had arrived in Christchurch from Australia a year earlier and quickly began drawing crowds when he lectured in Cathedral Square. A long and often absurd battle with authorities started then, and continued for decades.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says Christchurch City Council does not have the ability to help. It pushed for greater setbacks when the district plan was being developed a few years ago, but the independent hearing panel did not agree. “We can’t change the district plan to achieve any greater setbacks; we tried and were not successful in doing that. The solution is not here.” Dalziel said the council s proposal for a buffer zone was rebuffed.
