80-year-old planes offer glimpse into World War II history

JANESVILLE, Wis. Sometimes a look into history means tilting your head towards the sky.
Two World War II planes landed at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport in Janesville today. The B-29 “Fifi,” and the b-24 “Diamond Lil” are part of the Commemorative Air Force’s “Airpower History Tour,” traveling the country to bring the past to life.
The Commemorative Air Force is a non-profit made up of volunteers who spend their time maintaining the 80-year-old planes. Maintaining such relics isn’t exactly easy, but according to Commemorative Air Force Colonel Phil Pedron, the effort is a labor of love.
Hyvee stores using murals to spread awareness for food insecurity

One local Hyvee branch has enlisted the help of an artist to spread the message.
Artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen made his fourth and final stop to paint a mural at a Hyvee store on the east side of Madison on Sunday. It’s part of his partnership with Hyvee to promote their “one-step” program to combat food insecurity.
The program allows Hyvee to donate a portion of proceeds from sales of Chobani, Kelloggs, Keurig, and Dr. Pepper products to purchase meals for those in need.

Buseum offers mobile history lesson with modern relevance

MADISON, Wis. A history lesson on wheels pumped the brakes on State Street today to offer people a free glimpse into the Midwest 100 years ago.
Michael Luick-Thrams’s Bus-eum has been cruising around the midwest since 2003, making pit stops in different states. It’s meant to highlight the childhood era of the Greatest Generation, featuring five focus topics: the Cow War, the 1918 pandemic, the anti-german sentiment during world war 1, the prohibition, and the Ku Klux Klan.
“This really is looking at the prequel, the backstories of those men who got off in Normandy and stormed the beach to chase Hitler,” said Luick-Thrams. “What were they weaned on? What did they grow up on?”
Baraboo Nerf war seeks to unite community, create safe space

BARABOO, Wis. They say all is fair in love and war. At today’s Nerf war, however, it seems like everybody won.
After months of planning, Baraboo’s first official community Nerf war took place in Oschner park today beginning at noon. The battle drew in a crowd of over 120, armed, but not dangerous.
The event started as a casual backyard game at founder Thunder Decorah’s house in Mauston. Decorah would host Nerf wars between his own kids and kids from two other families as part of his ministry’s goal of fostering innocent play.
