Tom Wolf on Monday visited Pennsylvania State University s main campus in State College to celebrate the passing of Act 26 of 2021, which allows NCAA athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness (NIL). This is an exciting moment for college athletes, Wolf said.Two dozen other states have passed similar legislation. NIL is a giant stride forward. Gov. Tom Wolf and Pennsylvania lawmakers joined Penn State student-athletes and administrators on Monday at Beaver Stadium to celebrate Pennsylvania’s new name, image and likeness legislation. Signed into law on June 30, Act 26 amended the Public School Code to allow athletes at any Pennsylvania college to make money from endorsements or business ventures without impacting eligibility, as well as being able to hire agents. A day later, the NCAA implemented overarching legislation allowing athletes to make money from NIL activities consistent with state law. Together, the legislation and policy change mean new opportunities for student-athletes. Wolf called it a “new chapter” for collegiate athletics.

Tom Wolf, State Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman (R-Centre), and various student athletes gathered at Penn State University Monday to celebrate the signing of a bill that allows student athletes to profit off their name, image, and likeness. The bill, which Wolf signed on July 1, comes on the heels of a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision last month that said the NCAA could not bar education-related payments to students. Penn State University President Eric J. Barron thanked state lawmakers for working to quickly pass the new law. “[It] will protect the integrity of the game and will provide our student athletes with much-deserved opportunities to financially benefit from their hard work,” said Barron.
