Significant changes to the road layout on State Highway 2 Maunganui Rd at the Bayfair roundabout are scheduled from next week.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency infrastructure delivery regional manager Jo Wilton said with four of the five ground improvements sites completed the focus of the project was moving to the construction of the underpass and the Bayfair flyover.
A month earlier, BBMP administrator Gaurav Gupta had inspected the junction to review the underpass project. He apparently directed officials to go ahead with the plan of axing trees as the tree expert committee had already given approval to remove about 25 trees.

Wichit Police were called to the scene, in the southbound exit lane just north of the intersection to Naka Temple, at about 4:10pm.
At the scene officers found a 22-wheeled truck and trailer had struck the back of a small white hatchback. The collision started a chain reaction, with four other cars rammed into each other, and one black pickup truck pivoted across the lane with its tailgate resting on a station wagon that had ploughed through the concrete divider separating oncoming traffic.
