A chronically homeless man died after an infection that had already required the amputation of one foot and leg, spread to the other. And other individuals struggling with homelessness over the past year have died in the heat, been struck by vehicles ore were on the receiving in of violence. Anecdotally, homeless advocates say they believe the number of deaths are up significantly in 2020 and 2021. There s no way to know for sure.  Neither the state nor Marion County track homeless deaths, leaving many of the dead forgotten to everyone but the few who may have known them.

Alleged arson fire near Salem airport results in $1 million in damage

Salem Statesman Journal A man living at a Salem park faces arson and criminal mischief charges after allegedly firing a flare gun that ignited a storage facility near the Salem Municipal Airport Monday resulting in about $3 million in damages.  Salem and Marion County Fire District #1 firefighters responded to a report of a large fire around 6 p.m. at the Airport Self Storage, 2142 Turner Road SE. Aumsville firefighters were also initially dispatched but later recalled. Authorities said the four-alarm fire burned for several hours and destroyed an estimated 25 storage units.  There were no injuries reported, though approximately 189 individual storage renters lost belongings in the fire, according to a probable cause statement.
