Virtual Saturday Morning at the Zoo
The nonprofit Wild Wonders animal refuge offers a virtual program, “Saturday Morning at The Zoo,” at 10 a.m. Saturday featuring Wonders from Down Under a continent of “macropods” (marsupials such as kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos), poisonous toads and laughing birds. Local genealogy buffs discuss analyzing DNA
The DNA Interest Group, sponsored by the North San Diego County Genealogical Society, will hold a live webinar from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Evert-Jan Blom will discuss “Analyzing Your DNA Matches Using Genetic Affairs.” The webinar is free; registration is required at nsdcgs.org.
Center hosts ‘Noble Purpose’ sessions
The Carlsbad Senior Center hosts a free series of classes, based on the book “Noble Purpose: Igniting Extraordinary Passion for Life and Work” by Barry Heermann, from 7 to 8 p.m. March 9 Tuesday. The interactive class focuses on “discovering your Essential Self” and meaningful endeavors. The class is conducted via conference calls beginning with an introduction describing the course and answering questions on Tuesday and continuing weekly from 7 to 8 p.m. starting March 23. Tip Top Run turns virtual this year

The annual Tip Top Run at Agua Hedionda Lagoon has turned into a virtual Tip Top Run and Ride for Raptors, which takes place Saturday through March 19. The running and biking event will raise money for the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation’s expansion of its educational program, including building the new Raptor Ridge on Cannon Road
The virtual event, “Herstory: Leadership, Career Change & Continued Service,” is free and open to the public.
Veterans on the panel will reflect on their individual experiences as women in military, leadership skills gained, challenges they overcame while transitioning to civilian life, and how they now continue to impact their communities.
After the panel, there will be a Q&A.
The event takes place March 10 at 5:30 p.m.
runs essay contest
The nonprofit Camp Pendleton Historical Society is running an essay contest focused on the base’s history open to undergraduate students enrolled at San Diego County colleges and universities. Essays should delve into the history of the land now known as Camp Pendleton. Essays can be up to 5,000 words and will be judged on historical accuracy, historical interest, organization and presentation. The first-place prize is $1,000; second place, $500. A letter of application for entry into the contest with name, address, school, area of interest and tentative title of essay must be submitted by March 1 to essaycontest.cphs@gmail.com, with “Essay Contest” in the subject line.
