Punjab Mail, India s Oldest Railway Service Completes 109 Years

Punjab Mail, India s Oldest Railway Service Completes 109 Years Punjab Mail, India s oldest running passenger train, has completed 109 years and will enter its 110th year tomorrow.   |  1 Jun 2021 8:01 AM GMT Punjab Mail, India s oldest running passenger train, has completed 109 years and will enter its 110th year tomorrow. Though passenger train services were suspended from March 22, 2020 to May 1, 2020 during the Covid-19 lockdown, they were gradually resumed as special trains when the lockdown was lifted. The Punjab Mail Special, on the other hand, began its journey with LHB coaches on December 1 last year. The Bombay to Peshawar Punjab Mail s origins are a mystery. The Punjab Mail had her inaugural run out of Ballard Pier Mole station on 1 June 1912, according to a Cost Estimate report from 1911 and a complaint from an upset passenger from October 12, 1912 about the late arrival of the train by a few minutes in Delhi.

Greg Skaff s Star Bright On Polaris

Guitarist Greg Skaff s latest album, Polaris, finds the former Wichitan and longtime New York City resident accompanied by two of the greatest living jazz players: bassist Ron Carter and drummer Albert Tootie Heath. Comprised of original material from Skaff as well as a bevy of standards, the record demonstrates Skaff s particular genius on his instrument, including his singular phrasing and the ability to reimagine standards in such a way that renders them new. Not a small feat, but then neither is recruiting two legends for your record and finishing the LP at the dawn of a pandemic. Polaris, as Skaff tells it, was tracked in two quick bursts of activity: The first in August 2019 and the second in March 2020, amid circumstances that were filled with levity (in the case of Carter and Heath reuniting for the first time in decades) and gravity (the arrival of COVID-19 and the fate of sessions hanging in the balance).

Today in Music History - March 2

Today in Music History - March 2 The Canadian Press 2021-03-02 Today in Music History for March 2:   In 1942, Charlie Christian, the man responsible for making the guitar a lead instrument rather than just a part of the rhythm section, died in New York of tuberculosis. He was only 25. Though Christian recorded for only three years, his single-string picking technique on the then-new electric guitar had a vast impact on both jazz and rock n roll. Most of his recordings were with Benny Goodman s sextet, and he co-wrote such Goodman favourites as Solo Flight, Seven Come Eleven and Air Mail Special.
