On 1st. of July Dhaka University celebrated its 100th anniversary. As the country along with rest of world is going through a devastating pandemic, killing thousands of people, the Centenary Celebration was a bit lacklustre and token excepting few alumni publishing some commentaries in some national dailies and a handful coming to talk on TV and arranging few webinars. The Vice-chancellor and his colleagues also planted few saplings to mark this historic occasion. One hundred years of existence of a university in a country like Bangladesh is definitely an occasion to be proud of. For my generation it is more so because as a student we could also experience Golden Jubilee of the University in 1971 but as the country was inching towards the Liberation War there wasn’t much scope for any celebration, excepting DUCSU publishing a twelve page tabloid sized bulletin. There were few seminars at TSC.

Days after Visva Bharati University named Nobel laureate Amartya Sen as a squatter on its land, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said the Public Works Department (PWD) will take back control of a road near the campus.
The 2.9 km long road passes through the front of Amartya Sen’s house – popularly known as ‘Pratichi’ – and connects two campuses of the university - Santiniketan and Sriniketan. The road belongs to the state PWD but its possession was given to the university authorities in 2017 on their request.
“They requested us to take custody of the road two-three years ago for their convenience. There are many complaints from local people that they are not being allowed to use the road and it was causing inconvenience. The road is also not maintained properly. So, the PWD will now take control of it, Banerjee said at an administrative meeting at Bolpur in Birbhum district.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday wrote to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen voicing support for him after reports emerged that the Visva Bharati University has mentioned him in a list of people with unauthorised plots of land within its premises, reported NDTV.
“Some nouveau invaders in Visva Bharati have started raising surprising and baseless allegations about your familial properties,” she wrote. “This pains me, and I want to express my solidarity with you in your battles against bigotry of majoritarians in this country, the battles that have made you an enemy of these forces of untruth.”
