More than two dozen homemakers (housewives) of Dhanbad celebrated Republic Day by participating in a fashion show on Monday, a day ahead of Republic Day. The fashion show was organised by a Jharia-based youth organization Samadhan, in a private banquet hall of Saraidhela. The homemakers walked the ramp donning attires of our national heroes including Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Khudiram Bose, etc.
The event was organised with the aim of providing an opportunity to housewives who themselves do not get the chance of participating in competitions and cultural programmes as they remain busy preparing their children for Republic Day functions.
Dhanbad deputy commissioner Uma Shankar Singh announced on Sunday the district administration plans to renovate the Randhir Verma Chowk situated near the district headquarters.
Singh made the announcement while talking to the media on the sidelines of a programme organised by Randhir Verma Memorial Society on the 30th death anniversary of former Dhanbad superintendent of police Late Randhir Prasad Verma at Randhir Verma Chowk on Sunday.
Randhir Prasad Verma, who sacrificed his life fighting with the terrorists foiling a bank robbery attempt 30 years ago on January 3, 1991, was awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously.
“The sacrifice made by Late Randhir Prasad Verma is a source of inspiration for not only for the people of Jharkhand but for youth across the country,” said Singh.
A group of youth from Jharia, engaged in social work, on Wednesday carried out a unique mak-distribution drive at different squares of Dhanbad posing as Santa Claus to create awareness regarding Covid-19 guidelines.
The drive began at around 10 am from Chhai Gadda locality, a slum situated in the backside of the Dhanbad Railway Station. The volunteers of the organisation, Samadhan, led by its founder Chandan Singh, celebrated Christmas by cutting cakes and singing carols. More than 500 masks were also distributed among the residents during the time.
Talking to The Telegraph Online after the programme, Singh said, “We used three 20-pound cakes, which were provided to us by Dhanbad Senior Superintendent of Police, Aseem Vikrant Minz. The children were quite happy at our initiative.”

Days after Dhanbad administration criticised the police for their heavy-handedness in “forcing” soft coke kiln factories to remain shut and asked for a clarification from the erring officers, the district’s SSP on Friday claimed there was a “contradiction” between the action taken by the police and their alleged excesses.
