With the ruling BJP party confident of winning over 100 seats in the upcoming assembly poll in Assam, the first phase election for 47 assembly constituencies is crucial for the saffron party to retain power in the state and achieve its ‘Mission 100 plus’ target.
This is in contrary to the position in 2016, when BJP had projected the then union minister Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief ministerial face before the elections were held.

Most of the political parties have released their first list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Out of the 223 names that have been announced, only 19 are women.
To lure the 49.35 per cent strong women electorate in Assam to vote for them, parties make a lot of promises. But as evident with the release of the first candidacy lists, all the parties have scored low in the gender equality parameter.
The disgruntled minister Sum Ronghang also accused BJP party members of conspiring against him. Congress is likely to field him from the Diphu constituency held by him.
