Tuesday morning wreck closes US 20, at least two hurt

ANGOLA — An Angola woman was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, after a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup she was a passenger in was struck by a semi-tractor trailer on U.S. 20 at C.R. 600W Tuesday morning. Marion M. Pocock, 53, of Angola was taken first by Steuben County Emergency Medical Services to the Tri-State Steuben County Municipal Airport before being taken via a waiting Samaritan Helicopter to the Fort Wayne hospital. She was last listed in critical condition, said a media release from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department. The release said Raymond J. Parks, 26, Kendallville, was driving his 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche northbound on C.R. 600W when he failed to yield the right-of-way to the 1995 Kenworth semi-tractor trailer driven by Jose G. Fregoso, 54, Zephyrhills, Florida.

Angola Fire Department looking to replace decades-old engine

ANGOLA — The Angola Fire Department is looking to add a new fire engine to its fleet of safety and rescue vehicles, one that will replace a truck that has served Angola-area residents for more than 20 years. The Angola Common Council is set to vote on Monday to approve a contract between the city and South Haven, Mich.-based Spencer Manufacturing Inc. for a new pumper tanker with a $693,909 price tag. The truck, a 2021 Spencer Pumper Tanker model, will utilize a Spartan Metrostar chassis and all-polypropylene body built in Fort Wayne. It will seat up to five firefighters and include an 1,800-gallon water tank.

Indiana conservation officers helped rescue three men who fell through the ice on Big Turkey Lake in Steuben County Wednesday. Around 3:30 p.m., officers got the call that fishermen had fallen through the ice near 10200 west block of County Road 475 South. Brad Levitz, 61, and his son, Bradley Levitz, 40, were trying to walk on the ice. The father realized the danger and began to return to shore when the son fell through the ice, about 200 yards away from land.

Three men fall through Big Turkey Lake ice

STROH — Three men had to be pulled from Big Turkey Lake after falling through the ice on Wednesday, said a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Law Enforcement. Indiana Conservation Officers responded to a report of three fishermen who had fallen through at about 3:30 p.m. One man had fallen into the lake as he was going out to ice fish with his father. He was freed from the water by two other fishermen and as they were returning to shore, they all went in. At approximately 3:30 p.m., Steuben County Communications received a 911 call that the fishermen had fallen through the ice near the 10200 block West C.R. 475S.
