Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid reveals the bridge too far that his adaptation of the bloody computer game won t cross

Advertisement It may be a strange ambition for a movie based on a video game set in a fantasy world in which fighters with supernatural powers battle each other to the gruesome end, but director Simon McQuoid was determined to make Mortal Kombat as real as he possibly could. “It’s all about believing in a world,” says the Perth-based director of the brutal action movie, which was shot in South Australia in 2019. “What I’m trying to do is make the unreal real, the unbelievable believable. There’s so much stuff now that’s totally visual effects, and really great visual effects, it’s just that I think you can never beat reality.”
