FSU student government candidates debate prior to election day

Candidates for the Student Government positions of President, Vice President and Treasurer engaged in a debate on Monday, Feb. 22. The candidates shared their ambitions and agendas on how they believe they can make Florida State a better place for all students.
Those who participated were presidential candidate Jalen Blocker and his VP candidate Griffin Leckie for the Progress Party of Florida State, presidential candidate Nastassia Janvier and her VP Candidate Colbi Thykadavil for the Movement Party (previously known as Amplify) and presidential candidate John Alvarez, who is running independently.
Nearly a year ago, thousands of college students danced for 12 straight hours alongside families from Omahaâs Childrenâs Hospital & Medical Center. Each hour, the group joined together in tears and hugs as stories were shared and friends were made. Now, amid an ongoing pandemic, waves from afar will replace hugs, and families will be joining virtually for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Dance Marathon, HuskerThon 2021.
With the recent COVID-19 regulations, Recognized Student Organizations like Dance Marathon will be expected to check in-person event attendees for building access on their Safer Community App. With utilization of the recent regulations, students will be able to continue connecting in-person safely.
GSU Organizes Boycott of Student Services Fee, Citing Economic Burden

Nearly 500 graduate students at the University of Chicago have pledged to withhold payment of student services fees in a boycott organized by Graduate Students United (GSU).
Participating students have pledged to withhold payment until the University fulfills a list of demands, including waiving the student services fee of $416 per quarter or reducing it to no more than $125 per quarter for the entirety of the 2020-2021 academic year. GSU has also demanded that the University release more detailed information on the use of student services fee, including the percentage of funds allocated to each University service, and that it notify prospective students of the student services fee in advance of their enrollment.

Belonging to a college sorority or fraternity is not for everyone, but for those who participate, the benefits are well known. I can speak to this personally. As a young college student, I became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first Black collegiate fraternity. This was a pivotal moment in my life, and the brotherhood bonds I established remain to this day. Since our founding in 1906, our fraternity has been critical to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for African American men who have not always been accepted and embraced by their university communities.
At San Diego State University, we have the third-largest fraternity and sorority community in Southern California, and such organizations have been part of our community for more than a century. They have a long history of helping a diverse student body transition to college and develop positive social and leadership skills.
