Belonging to a college sorority or fraternity is not for everyone, but for those who participate, the benefits are well known. I can speak to this personally. As a young college student, I became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first Black collegiate fraternity. This was a pivotal moment in my life, and the brotherhood bonds I established remain to this day. Since our founding in 1906, our fraternity has been critical to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for African American men who have not always been accepted and embraced by their university communities.
At San Diego State University, we have the third-largest fraternity and sorority community in Southern California, and such organizations have been part of our community for more than a century. They have a long history of helping a diverse student body transition to college and develop positive social and leadership skills. Many of our more than 400,000 alumni have relied on this community for l
