Downeast Senior College on hiatus, seeks new volunteers
ELLSWORTH One of 17 senior colleges in Maine, the Downeast Senior College, which served Hancock County residents 50 years of age and above, is on pause, for a few different reasons.
An active organization for over 20 years, membership stood at over 100 at its peak. But, for the past year, only 46 county residents signed on.
Already lacking leadership to bring the organization into the technology age, a year-plus of pandemic restrictions then dealt the final blow, according to co-presidents Linda Hayman and Judy Hakola.
“Consequently, it has become necessary to declare the Downeast Senior College officially and effective inactive for an indeterminate period of time,” the co-presidents shared in a statement.
New business aims to teach mindfulness
BAR HARBOR With a passion for being outside in nature and a desire to teach people to use mindfulness as a way to reduce stress, Jen Harry has started Acadia Mindfulness Adventures a new business where she hosts two–hour outdoor, guided mindful quests.
To Harry, being open to whatever experience, whether it be good, bad or ugly, is considered a mindful practice.
“So, we’re open, we’re curious, but mostly we are compassionate to ourselves and our experience as we are going through it. We are also trying not to judge it,” she said. “I think mindfulness gets us out of our head and into our bodies and our present experiences, so we can be more present in our lives and enjoy these moments or find ways to be with them for the more difficult ones.” She added that there are ways to anchor in the present moment to help deal with challenges and strong emotions.
