CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The 25th-ranked Notre Dame baseball team kept the bats rolling to another victory when they defeated No. 21 Virginia 12-4 Saturday afternoon at Disharoon Park. The win clinched Notre Dame’s fourth-consecutive series victory dating back to last season. It is the first time the Irish have won four-straight series since joining the ACC. “Proud of the execution and grit of the team,” said head coach Link Jarrett. “Two good starting pitchers went toe to toe. I was pleased with how Bertrand settled in after a difficult fourth inning. He showed poise and was able to continue to collect outs after UVA had strung together several good at bats in a row.”

The Irish (5-2, 5-2 ACC) hit three home runs and tallied 14 hits to take the early lead in the series. “Some big moments throughout the course of the game,” said head coach Link Jarrett. “Three home runs and the base-running helped ignite our offense which has not been as consistent as we would like. Sheridan pitched really sharp and controlled five innings of relief including seven strikeouts.” Jared Miller, Niko Kavadas and Brooks Coetzee all went yard for the Irish as the offense carried the way on Friday. Graduate student Joe Sheridan came on in relief of Liam Simon and shut the Cavaliers (7-6, 2-5 ACC) down at the plate. Sheridan tossed five innings of scoreless relief and allowed just one hit.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Irish could not have asked for a much better start to the opening day of the 2021 NCAA Indoor National Championships on Thursday, picking up two First Team All-American honors on the women’s side with impressive performances from Rachel Tanczos and Jadin O’Brien. The Irish sit atop the standings in first place after the first day of competition, recording 13 points on the day. Tanczos earned national runner-up status in the weight throw and nearly took home the gold in the event. The senior posted a season-best mark of 23.24m (76-3) to match the best mark recorded in the NCAA this season heading into the final round. However, Louisville’s Makenli Forrest barely edged Tanzos on her final throw, recording a distance of 23.26m to win the event.

The Irish enter the series coming off a rare midseason open week. The matchup will feature two of the longest-tenured Division I college softball coaches in the nation, as Notre Dame’s Deanna Gumpf (759-326-1, 20th season) and North Carolina’s Donna Papa (1,313-744-5, 37th season) will meet at the plate. The two squads have met on 23 previous occasions, with the Irish leading the matchup 15-8. The last meeting was on March 25, 2018, when the Tar Heels emerged with a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame at Melissa Cook Stadium (Notre Dame, Indiana).
