April is Global Volunteer Appreciation Month. During my childhood in the Bahamas, no one really talked about volunteering. Everyone simply helped out whenever and wherever she or he could. My mother worked almost round the clock as the first woman photographer for both daily newspapers, the Nassau Guardian and the Daily Tribune. My three older sisters Odette, Minerva and Omath and I, walked a few miles from school to Auntie Mae’s house every weekday. From as far as a few blocks away, I could smell the sweet aroma of whole wheat bread baking in the oven. Every school day, Auntie Mae baked a fresh loaf of bread for “Esther’s girls.” Everyone talked about how skinny we were, and tried to fatten us up. (KMAN file photo) Local businesses have had to comply with Local Health Order 19 since last fall and while many may be tired of restrictions, a lot of local establishments are adapting to the new way of conducting business. Within it, the health order mandates masks be worn in any public space in the county where social distancing can’t be maintained. The City of Manhattan also implemented its own mask mandate last year requiring compliance. It remains in effect until April 1.
