In a diverse America, whites don t deserve majority status – Blue Ridge Muse

In 1981, we moved from Alton, IL, to the Washington, DC area, so I could start what I then thought would be, at most, a two or three-year sabbatical to lean more about how our national government worked, so I could use that knowledge as a newspaperman. We looked briefly at housing in the District of Columbia, but decided it was too expensive and crowded. Virginia was the best option because it was closer to the Capitol than anywhere else, and we found a condo for rent on the Orange subway line that would offer good public transportation not only to work but to visit other parts of the capital city.

Most corrupt president in history leaves: Jail to the chief

I was born in Tampa, FL, in 1947. My dad, who survived World War II as a Navy Electricians Mate, died less than a year later in a work-accident at a phosphorus plant between Tampa and Gibsonton. Dad is buried in Hillsborough County, just north of Tampa. So is my mother, whose ashes were shared with him and her last husband in Floyd County after her death in 2012. Several cousins, nieces and nephews still live in the Sunshine State. I haven’t seen them since burying my grandmother, near my dad, in 1994. Later work-related trips to Florida were to Jacksonville, Daytona, Orlando and Miami and I didn’t have time to venture over to the other side of the state to visit.

Lady Buffs JV wins big but Varsity loses to Radford at home – Blue Ridge Muse

The first game of a basketball doubleheader at Floyd County High School Monday started off like the season opener last week with the Lady Buffaloes Junior Varsity team taking an early lead over the visiting Radford Bobcats and kept adding to that lead, so the referees suspended time outs for the fourth quarter and the Lady Buffs finished off the Bobcats 52-12. Both the boys Buffaloes and the Lady Buffs did the same last week with lopsided wins over Narrows and Giles for their season openers. But Monday night’s games agaisnt Radford turned sour after the JV win by the Lady Buffs. The Varsity fell behind at the start, gained the lead briefly in the second quarter, then fell behind again after a key player was sidelined by an ankle injury and a qustionable call by the refs seemed to deflate the ladies.
