On the evening of 23 October 1986, a prison riot broke out at the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Long Bay Gaol.  Three prison officers were taken hostage by inmates armed with makeshift weapons and, despite attempts by the officers to negotiate with the prisoners, they were locked in a nearby cell.  Seventy inmates then took control of a section of the Centre.

Premium Content Subscriber only A variety of names have been suggested for Maryborough s new water park, some inspired by Mary Poppins, some by Anzac Park in which it is being built and another by a special Maryborough man who lost his fight with cystic fibrosis in 2017. A motion with a recommendation will be heard before the Fraser Coast Regional Council meeting on Wednesday. But the Poppins-inspired names and the suggestion of Thunder Park in honour of Maryborough s Coen Thunder Ashton have been rejected in favour of SplashSide. This is in keeping with the water theme that proved most popular during the community consultation when it came to suggesting a name for the new park.

Dawn Service draws hundreds in Maryborough

Premium Content Subscriber only The Maryborough community turned out for the Anzac Day Dawn Service in what was described as one of the largest turnouts for the annual event. Maryborough‘s local veterans and serving military personnel welcomed the return of the Dawn Service as it was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Representatives from the Maryborough RSL, Fraser Coast Regional Council, emergency services and community paid their respects and laid wreaths during the service. Hundreds from the Maryborough community packed the corner of Bazaar and Sussex Street for the Dawn Service. For Stela O‘Gorman, this year’s commemorations were an opportunity to educate her children Myles and Elsie about the importance of Anzac Day.

The Anzac Day parade at Howard. Carlie Walker The march was accompanied by the sound of the bagpipes and ex servicemen and women along with dozens of school children took part in the March. Fraser Coast mayor George Seymour and Cr James Hansen with members of the Craignish Scouts. Carlie Walker A solemn moment of silence was then held at the cenotaph. The march followed the dawn parade, held at 4.20am, which was followed by Howard s dawn service at 5am.
