COVINGTON, Ga. Covington Assistant City Manager Freddy Morgan recently announced the promotion of Joel Smith to the position of electric director.
Smith will assume full management responsibility for the electric function, Morgan said, and will exercise supervisory, administrative and professional work in planning, organizing and coordinating the electric system in his new role.
Smith brings with him more than 20 years of electrical experience, eight of which have been spent with the city of Covington. Smith was hired in 2013 as an apprentice lineman and was promoted several times before being named electric director.

COVINGTON, Ga. An application for a special use permit to open an oil change business on Georgia Hwy. 278 was denied by the Covington City Council during its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 4.
The council also elected to table items that included discussion and a public hearing for to rezone property at 9155 Jackson Highway from NR2 (Neighborhood Residential District 2) to NR3 (Neighborhood Residential District 3) for “proposed future development;” discussion of requests for proposals for broker services for employee benefits; and discussion of the first reading of an ordinance amending the city’s “Electric Service Tariff.”

COVINGTON, Ga. Recent salary study results show some employees of the city of Covington could use a pay raise.
In a salary survey conducted by The Archer Company, recommendations for the city to consider included each job grade consist of 14 steps and 3% between each step. The market step is set at step 7. Archer also recommends each employee reach their salary range midpoint after six years of employment.
