DUNCAN, Okla. (TNN) - The Safe Center will be hosting a Victimsâ Rights Awareness Memorial Service for those whose lives have been affected by violent crime.
The service will held in Duncan at Fuqua Park beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday evening.
The service is also being held in conjunction with the Stephens County District Attorneyâs Office and The Stephens County coordinated Community Response Team.
Everyone is invited to attend.

DUNCAN, Okla. (TNN) - Itâs National Crime Victimsâ Rights Week, and local advocates are reminding crime victims and their families about the rights and resources they have through Marsyâs Law of Oklahoma.
Angela Wiles has been advocating for Marsyâs Law and crime victimsâ rights since her 14-year-old daughter Alyssa was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend in 2013 in Duncan.
About 24 hours after Alyssa broke up with him, 16-year-old Michael Ray brutally murdered her as she slept. Another younger teenager acted as a lookout for him.

DUNCAN, Okla. (TNN) - Duncanâs Safe Center is expanding its services to include offering victims of sexual assault a SANE room where they can receive the specific medical treatment they need.
SANE stands for sexual assault nurse examination. A SANE room is one thatâs reserved specifically for victims of sexual assault to receive medical treatment in and a SANE nurse is someone who is specialized to offer that treatment.
The problem in Stephens County is that there is no SANE nurse for miles and victims of sexual assault in the area have to wait hours to receive the treatment they need.

A local community member received recognition from AARP after taking home an honoree position for the Oklahoma AARP Andrus Award for Community Service for all that she does within the City of Duncan.
The Andrus Award, named after AARP Founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, is the highest honor presented by AARP. This yearâs 2020 Andrus Award was presented to Elaine Johns, of Enid, with Martin Abbott and Duncanâs own Carolyn Rodgers selected as honorees.
Rodgers, who received $1,000 that went to the charity of her choice, selected Color Duncan Beautiful to receive the funds.
âI plan to buy crapemyrtles in the spring that will be planted along the Crapemyrtle Trail,â Rodgers said. âIâll buy as many as I can and give them to individuals free of charge to plant in their front yards. My purpose since 2007 has been to beautify Duncan and help to make it a community that we can be proud to call home.â
