Author Mary Giuseffi says modeling sabotaged the way she viewed herself. When she started modeling at 11, her agency, Ford Models, told her to drop 25 lbs.
“You could imagine, the record started playing in my head about body image,” Giuseffi said. “My father quickly realized the industry for what it was and didn’t want to expose me to the daily life of a model.”
But by the time she left modeling, the damage was done. She returned to her modeling career at 19, armed with thick skin backed by a new found self-confidence and acceptance.
“Part of the reason it happened was because I stopped working against my image and with my image,” she said. “Who I wanted to be and what I was, were different. The first step is to see who we are and harness the power of who we could be.”
