VIENNA, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - One of Fairfax County’s top teachers unions is asking Fairfax County Public Schools to push back its tentative return to class start date on February 16 citing Virginia s COVID-19 vaccine supply shortage and massive vaccine appointment cancellations throughout the state.
Appointments to receive the coronavirus vaccine are being canceled all across the Commonwealth, including those scheduled for FCPS.

Virginia governor says state is updating education guidance
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced on Thursday that the state is shifting gears in regards to opening schools.
RICHMOND, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - Virginia Governor Ralph Northam says the state is switching gears when it comes to re-opening schools in the midst of the pandemic.
On Thursday, the Governor announced that schools will no longer operate under the assumption that they should stay closed while the novel coronavirus surges, they will operate under the mandate that schools need to be open, and here are the ways they can do that safely.

Unions with more than 48,000 educators and staff in the D.C. area are hosting a “National Day of Resistance” on Tuesday to urge regional officials to collaborate on reopening schools amid the pandemic.
“At the center of the mobilization is a core demand the unions and associations have united behind, calling for Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to coordinate across school district boundaries for a single, cohesive plan on reopening schools in the region for remote and in-person instruction,” according to a press release from the Fairfax Education Association.
