The fire, which started in the area of Bridges Lane and Fir Butte Road just before 4 p.m., is one of two grass fires that sparked up in west Eugene Monday afternoon. Officials said the fire grew to about six acres and was moving to the west and southwest. Several residents along Royal Avenue west of Fir Butte Lane were encouraged to evacuate, but officials now say it is safe to return to their homes. So far, there are no reports of injuries or structures lost.

Algae Bloom At Fern Ridge Lake Prompts Health Advisory

Fern Ridge Reservoir is west of Eugene in Lane County. Credit Army Corps of Engineers Drinking water directly from areas of the lake affected by the bloom are especially dangerous. Activities like fishing, camping, hiking and bird watching are still encouraged at Fern Ridge Lake according to OHA. Boating is safe as long as its not at speeds that could create water spray that might be inhaled. The algae contains cyanotoxins, which can be deadly, especially to children and pets. Tags:
