At Cuturi Gallery, Singapore’s emerging artists share the spotlight Share
It’s a feat worthy of applause when a relatively unknown artist manages to cut through the noise and emerge with an exhibition of their own work.
At Cuturi Gallery, then, a standing ovation is in order. That’s because the independent gallery, newly relocated on Aliwal Street, is now hosting the solo exhibitions of not one but four homegrown artists.
Even more remarkable is the fact that the line-up is a diverse one: there’s Vanessa Liem, a 19-year-old painter who graduated from the School of the Arts, Singapore just last year; Faris Heizer and Mujahid Jalil, both equally young Fine Arts alumni from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts with already distinguished art styles; and Marla Bendini, a seasoned transgender artist who is now entering a new phase of her career with her paintings.

As the recent Singapore Art Week has shown us, the local art landscape is a rich and diverse one.
There is a multitude of Singaporean artists to be discovered, including painters that draw from traditions of past art movements; conceptual artists that tackle social issues such as marginalisation and class politics; and digital creators that blur the lines between fantasy and reality.
What’s just as exciting is the support that have buoyed these emerging creatives as of late. Take Creative Unions, for example. The month-long programme, currently held at Funan Mall, has selected an array of Singapore artists to team up with brands across fashion, food, lifestyle and more. And let’s not forget the efforts of independent galleries like Cuturi Gallery and Coda Culture, which can be credited to putting these young talents in the spotlight in the first place.
The Straits Clan has just launched an art residency programme

Private members club The Straits Clan has partnered up with The Artling to launch a residency programme for its Creative Studio programme, featuring four Singaporean artists: Tiffany Loy, Masuri Mazlan, Dawn Ang (a.k.a Aeropalmics) and Andre Wee. The inaugural Creative Studio will form part of the Straits Clan Arts Programme, which aims to provide a unique platform for local artists and designers to come together and hone their craft over a four-month period. The artists will work from a studio space at The Straits Clan – and the new works will be exhibited at the club at the end of the residency period.
