Call for a roof over Portlaoise Main Street

A Portlaoise councillor has suggested a roof to cover the Main Street to boost business this Summer.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald is tabling a motion to this morning s Portlaoise Municipal District Meeting. That the council apply for funding for a canopy / roof for Main Street and also ensure that Market Square is included in the Public Realm, she asks.
The town recently was awarded €9 million in Government funding for Public Realm Works at Market Sq, Main St and Lyster Sq to enhance access and regenerate business and cultural activity.
It will also pay for the completion of the Cultural Quarter around Fitzmaurice Square and Scoil Mhuire, enhancing the streetscape on James Fintan Lalor Avenue to prioritise pedestrian access, cycling and public transport, and creating urban development sites along JFL Ave.

The €9 million allocated to Portlaoise shows that the Government has confidence in the town s future, according to Laois County Council s Chief Executive.
Mr John Mulholland added that money for the Low Carbon Town Placemaking initiative would mean the council could now push ahead with projects in the town centre.

Portlaoise s business community has welcomed the €9 million investment in the Low-Carbon Town initiative as a much-needed boost.
Both Downtown Portlaoise welcomed the money which is in addition to an earlier €9 million allocated to the revitalisation of the town centre.
Portlaoise publican PJ Kavanagh is Chairman of the Downtown Portlaoise group. Downtown Portlaoise are delighted with this week s exciting confirmation of yet another substantial grant for the future development of Portlaoise town centre. This, coupled with last year s equally substantial grant, is a much-needed boost for local traders in the current trading environment.
