Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services will be lifting restrictions on specific lockdown areas as results of COVID-19 tests become available.
In an update statement issued this afternoon, the ministry said that the decisions about containment areas would also await results from the backlog of tests.
The ministry has a backlog of approximately 11,000 swab samples due to the temporary shutdown of the Fiji Centre for Disease Control (CDC).
A total of 7000 backlogged swabs were flown out to Australia today, with another 4000 expected to be sent on Saturday.
May 19, 2021 09:29:21 AM The Ministry for Health makes 1785 coronavirus tests per day in its bid to rid the disease. Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong said in the midst of last year’s coronavirus outbreak, there were 776 tests in the entire month of April. Speaking during the press conference, Dr. Fong said that before the outbreak testings had grown to about 250 to 300 per day. He said before the temporary shutdown of the Fiji Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention over the weekend they were testing at an average of 1785 samples per day. “I mentioned that we had run more than 2,500 tests since yesterday, I want to put our current testing capacity in perspective for everyone,” he said.
