Parents and students rally for Laguna Beach USD to nix proposed schedule change

Laguna Beach Local News Laguna Beach students and parents protest the so-called “4 by 4” scheduled change at Park Avenue and Legion Street on May 21. Photo by Daniel Langhorne More than 60 Laguna Beach parents and students waived colorful signs and chanted at Park Avenue and Legion Street on Wednesday to protest a proposed academic schedule for the Laguna Beach Unified School District. Many of the protestors were frustrated with the so-called “4 by 4” model that would enroll students in four courses per semester for the 2021-22 school year, rather than the usual six courses. Students would also need to complete each course in a semester instead of the usual practice of an entire school year.

Letter: Setting the Record Straight on Artlofts - Laguna Beach Local News

Laguna Beach Local News Recently councilmember George Weiss has been disseminating misleading and inaccurate information about the Artlofts Laguna Beach with the intent to stir up controversy. He is intentionally stoking the fire for some unknown reason. Perhaps political or just self-serving. Not only is he being disingenuous to the entire community, but even more so to his own constituents who support his “no development” at any cost perspective. His supporters tend to repeat his misleading and inaccurate statements and often respond in public forums with uneducated and inaccurate statements on a court ruling that is currently under review. Our 28-unit artist work live facility in the canyon has been under a microscope for over 14 years with two unanimous California Coastal Commission approvals. Our project has had 180 design changes that pass all building codes with absolutely no variances. The project reduces traffic by having work/live under one roof. It restores 350 fe

Laguna Beach moves forward with plan for Tesla batteries at Food Pantry, ASL

Laguna Beach Local News Cars line up to receive free groceries at Laguna Food Pantry in December 2020. Photo by Daniel Langhorne The City Council approved an agreement Tuesday with Swell Services, Inc. to purchase, install, and maintain 14 Tesla Powerwall II batteries to provide backup power at the Alternative Sleeping Location and Laguna Food Pantry. In December 2020, councilmembers directed city staff to apply for and receive funding from the State’s Self Generation Incentive Program to move forward with the project. The state conditionally awarded the grant in February. Swell would maintain the batteries for a 10-year term and could potentially be extended for a five-year term or the city could decide to purchase the batteries outright in the sixth year.

Letter: As Regards the Sweetwater Project - Laguna Beach Local News

Laguna Beach Local News I don’t take issue with the proposed development at the Sweetwater site. I take issue with its contemporary design. What is proposed would fit far better in Irvine. Not our Village by the Sea. Why not consider a design like our Lumberyard on Forest? Or a craftsman style like the Montage? As a past resident of La Jolla in the 70’s and early 80’s, I watched a charming village turn into what is now an urban setting, basically ignoring its older charms. The Sweetwater project is another step towards a featureless, vanilla attempt to maximize square footage with no regard to our village character.

Letter: An International Destination - West Street Beach - Laguna Beach Local News

Sometimes we forget that we have a LGBT-friendly beach, West Street beach in south Laguna north of the stairway with the same name. West Street became a popular “gay” beach when Main Beach Park was under construction and our historic LGBT beach was south of the main lifeguard tower to Hotel Laguna. People going to West Street can take a free trolley starting June 25 and or park on South Coast Highway, the parking lots at Aliso Beach or take the OCTA # 1 bus south from Long Beach and north from San Clemente from early morning to early evening. Within walking distance of this world listed beach is The Ranch at Laguna Beach, Ben Brown’s Golf Course, Harvest restaurant and other cafes in south Laguna including Coyote Grill, AhbA, South Swell Donuts and Pho, Neapolitan birreria, and the Lost Pier Cafe, directly north of West Street beach.
