Mkhize warns of additional restrictions as new Covid-19 infections surpass 3,000 for the first time in three months

Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has warned of the likelihood of additional restrictions in South Africa as a result of rising Covid-19 infections.
The minister told SABC’s Morning Live on Friday that the necessary parties will meet with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC), led by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, to discuss interventions.
South Africa recorded more than 3,000 new Covid-19 infections in a single day on Thursday (14 May) for the first time in three months.
Dr Mkhize noted that 42,073 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, with 3,221 new cases, representing a 7.7% positivity rate.

JOHANNESBURG – Seventy-two more people have died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus.
These fatalities - confirmed over the past 24-hour reporting cycle - take the known death toll to 54,968.
The
Business Day newspaper is reporting that South Africa has experienced one of the world s worst death tolls from COVID-19 relative to the size of its population.
The country s caseload since the start of the pandemic is now at 1 602 031, with 2,759 of these infections recorded over the past day.

The country recorded 2 759 new Covid-19 infections and 72 new deaths by Wednesday, according to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

New Covid-19 data shows infections rising in these areas – as third wave hits South Africa

Mkhize has warned provincial departments to prepare for a rise in cases in the coming weeks as the country is hit by a third wave of Covid-19 infections.
In a
notesent on Wednesday (12 May), Mkhize said that while the technical definitions have not officially been met, the steep rise in infections means that the country is now experiencing the start of a third Covid-19 wave.
He added that South Africa’s Covid-19 numbers will no longer go down unless it starts intensive containment measures.

The Health Department says 430,730 healthcare workers have been vaccinated to date.
The Health Department says it has recorded 2,759 infections in the last 24 hours pushing the country s known caseload to 1,602,031.
